A STITCH
IN TIME

An interview

  1. Number 1
    What was your first job?

My first job was as a whipping boy at Gieves and Hawkes. I was lucky enough to move through the ranks and helped introduce Made to measure tailoring at No.1 Savile Row.

  2. Number 2
What was it like in Savile Row at the time? Has it changed?

I have to say that it was all quite overwhelming, having being brought up in the wilds of Essex, to suddenly be thrust in front of Presidents, Actors and Royalty was quite a startling experience. I think the Row is still pretty much the same as it was with a few new additions, the only sad thing is that the real characters that taught and befriended me are long gone. God bless them.

  3. Number 3
What does Salts mean to you?

This business means a great deal to me as it contains all the ingredients that I would include if it were my own! Quality, integrity and honesty, a mix that will get you through most aspects of life with your head still high!

  4. Number 4
Why do you work at Salts?

I work here for the same reasons as those above, When you have built up the experience that I have you are able to make choices. Salts is my choice.

  5. Number 5
What are the key items to a mans' wardrobe?

A dark single breasted suit, crisp white shirt, silk tie and good English shoes (…well polished).

  6. Number 6
Any tips on matching brown shoes with a dark suit?

If you are going brown be confident – don’t do it if you have any doubt. Always make sure if you are wearing a belt make sure that it matches your shoes.

  7. Number 7
    Favourite restaurant in London?

I love Gaucho, my extended family live in Argentina and I have a client whose family have imported beef into Smithfield for many years, so good beef and red wine are a firm favourite.

  8. Number 8
Windsor, Half Windsor or Fore in Hand?

Fore in hand, a very dear friend of mine used to say “ Windsors are for school boys Wainwright – see to your tie”.

  9. Number 9
    Best dressed Englishman for 2008?

I cant answer this because I have a favourite that will never be beaten “Edward VII” a true icon. More style than a Saville Row mile”.

  10. Number 10
One fact that hardly anyone knows about you?

Despite my accent I am a proud Yorkshire man, born in Bradford quite some years ago.
